Buying Guide for Figure Skates

When you’re looking for your perfect pair of skates, it’s important to know not only what to buy, but how to ensure that you’re getting the best quality. That’s why we’ve produced a buying guide. Here, we’ll lead you through the basics aspects of figure skates, and how those aspects relate to your perfect purchase.

Boots

The boot itself is a very important part of the skate, as its features will ultimately lead to your comfort and stability on the ice. Let’s discuss different features of the boots and how they may affect your decision.

  • Materials

Often, synthetic leather is used in less expensive figure skates, and typically it provides less ankle support. That being said, modern models usually include extra padding, which makes them more comfortable.

Genuine leather boots are usually more professional, and thus more expensive. They provide solid support for your ankles, thus allowing you to perform different figures with better stability. However, they tend to be less comfortable to wear.

Whichever type of boot that you buy, they will need to be broken in. If you’re focused on a more professional boot, these will likely be stiffer and will thus be harder to break in.

  • Support and Stiffness

When trying to find a boot that fits your needs, ensure that the ankle support is good for you. It should be snug all the way around. As mentioned above, higher quality skates will be stiffer, thus offering more support for those who wish to do figures and jumps.

If you are just beginning, it is not recommended to buy skates that are very stiff. Doing so will make it harder for you to learn, and will cause more pain than it’s worth. Stick with beginner’s skates to start, and if you feel you need to upgrade, you can always do so in the future.

Blades

The way that the blades are designed is highly dependent on the type of figure skating that you plan on doing. For example, dancing skates tend to have short-tailed blades, while freestyle figure skates come with blades that are longer. It’s up to you to decide what type of figure skating you will do, and thus which blades will fit your needs.

  • Toe Picks

If your toe pick is too large, it will result in more difficult skating. Thus, check how many picks your blades have. A normal number of picks would be 3 or 4. However, for freestyle skating, you may find that more intense picks will be useful.

  • Fitting the Blades

In professional skates, the blades are screwed directly onto the boot so that skaters can adjust the fit as needed. When the blades are correctly centered to the body of the boot, it results in easy and natural skating across the ice. Your feet will be upright, not falling inward or outward.

  • Sharpening

It is not uncommon for blades to come unsharpened. Thus, it’s imperative that you sharpen them before taking them out on the ice. A professional sharpener who is familiar with figure skating should do this work, and it will cost you from $10 to $20. Sharpen them regularly to maintain good performance.

Other Features

Figure skates show the quality of the build by the extra features they have. If a boot is of lesser quality, it probably won’t include the items mentioned in the list below. If you’re looking for an intermediate to advance figure skate, then these features are important to ensure comfort and safety on the ice. Check to see if your boots have these features to ensure good quality.

  • Heel Counters

If you’re looking for an advanced skate, then it should come with heel counters. These will give you the extra support needed within the heel of the boot. If you’re planning on doing jumps or spins, make sure to check for this.

  • Reinforcements

We mentioned the importance of ankle support within the boot above. Reinforcements within the sides of the boot give extra ankle support. These should be found in intermediate to advanced boots.

  • Quarter Padding

A good figure skate is both comfortable and solid. Quarter padding within the boot gives you both of these essential features. They might not be found in less expensive boots.

Top Brands

Looking at some of the top brands in the world of figure skating, there are three that especially stand out.

  • Jackson

This company was actually founded Don Jackson, a man who dedicated his life to figure skating. Thus, the product is built by skaters, for skaters. The company was founded in 1966 and has grown to one of the most renowned sellers of figure skates in the world.

Today, Jackson continues to make skates on the basis of advice from skaters themselves. Thus, the product that they produce brings satisfaction to the end user.

  • Riedell

After over 70 years in the business, Riedell knows what they’re talking about. They help figure skaters find skates that they love and that keep them stable and comfortable on the ice. The founder, Paul Riedell, has a place in both the ice skating and roller skating Hall of Fame and created this company as a way to build the perfect skate for all different types of skaters.

They produce skates that are comfortable, but still great for high performance. They give you the edge that you need to beat the competition, or just to enjoy a recreational day around the rink.

This family-run business is now owned by Paul Riedell’s grandchildren who continue to carry on his legacy.

Buying Custom Figure Skates

Beginning to intermediate skaters will be quite happy with the quality and durability of a well-made skate. However, when is it reasonable to purchase a custom figure skate?

An adult at a professional level of figure skating may consider buying a figure skate that is custom fitted to their foot. Also, anyone who faces issues such as a wide ball, a thin heel, or other odd foot combinations may want to consider purchasing custom figure skates.

Conclusion

Choosing the best figure skates for your particular needs and wants will result in money well spent and potentially years of enjoyment. Depending on your level of skill or the type of figure skating that you want to do, your choice of skate may differ. The options above give you an idea of some of the best skates available, but remember that not every skate will fit every foot. Find the combination of features and design that works for you, and purchase your perfect figure skates!

How to Buy the High Quality Recreational Skates

I got my first pair of ice skates at the tender age of nine. I still ice skate, but have since graduated to rollerblading (inline skating) as an adult. I have skated on indoor and outdoor ice rinks, as well as frozen ponds and lakes. Being originally from Colorado, this was easy.  I also played hockey, which is a complete another story all its’ own.

My last pair of ice skates were CCM hockey skates, and I laid out over $200 for them.  What I am looking at now are the less expensive, albeit still nice, best recreational ice skates. The most important thing I can tell you is that size and fit definitely matters when it comes to comfort and safety, and a snug ankle is key.

Be prepared to do your research and spend one or two hours at the store finding the right skate, meaning the perfect fit. Your legs, feet and how well you skate depend on this. Quality also matters. This is important if you want your skates to last for years. So, you will want to do it right the first time.

Where to Buy

The best of recreational ice skates will run you between $50-$70, and you can purchase them online at Amazon.com. There are quite a few to look through, but you will be ahead of the game if you know what kind of skating you want to do and where.

Do you want to figure skate, or hockey skate or even speed skate?  This plays a big part in your choice of a skate. Fortunately, if it is your first time and you are not sure which category you fit into, then the recreational skate is for you.

The best recreational ice skate can go a long way in determining what skating you want to do and how often. You may even choose to stay with the all-encompassing recreational skate. That’s fine.

Types of Recreational Ice skates

Recreational skates come in all sizes, from men to woman and boys to girls. It can be a family affair. Men usually buy the pseudo-hockey skates, like the Riedell SS 830 Hockey skate Hockey skate. It is fast and fun, and you can skate relatively hard without harming yourself.

Women like skates like the Bladerunner Zephyr Women’s Recreational skate. These skates have a decent balance between hockey and freestyle. You will notice that the blade is a hockey blade, but it also has the serrated front edge for freestyle skating.

Boys and girls can go, either way, again depending on how they want to skate: Hockey of Figure. Usually, the boys go for the hockey skates, and girls go for figure skating. It all depends on, but a decent pair of recreational skates can go a long way in determining how they want to skate.

Plus, the skates for kids are adjustable. So you don’t have to go all out and get an expensive pair right away, besides, the chances are they will outgrow them in less than a year anyway.

Size and Material

Size is important for avoiding blisters and falls, and for just plain comfort.  You’ll want to pay close attention to what others are saying. Do they fall in the ‘true to shoe size’ category or in the ‘half-size smaller or larger’ category?

For material, are they a ‘hard plastic’ boot or a ‘softer mesh’ boot?  Will they hold up to the faster turning and solid stopping of hockey skates or are they more for gliding and doing graceful turns? All these come into play, no pun intended.

Also, how are they laced? Old school lacing or hard plastic buckles? Maybe a little of both. You need to determine which suits you better and is more comfortable. There are different types of skates for different types and styles of skating. Do your own research.

A lot of ice rinks rent out both hockey and figure skates, so that’s a great way to begin your research for the right skate.

Skate Brands

I have had different brand skates, and I have my favorites: Bauer, CCM, and K2. These are top of the line but they do have different price levels. You don’t have to buy any of these as there are other brands,  like Bladerunner’s, that will do the job right out of the gate.

It all depends on how and what you use them for. As with all things, ‘you get what you pay for,’ in the end.

Top Recreational Ice Skates Reviews

The best recreational skates are out there, and you can find the best for you through research and patience.  Amazon has a great selection, and you can begin and end there.

Go to the ice rink and try the rental skates to get a feel for skating. Ask the employees and other skaters what the best skates out there are. Research online and talk to friends. Your pair is out there, just be patient and do your research. Ice skating is great exercise and fun!  Take skating lessons and play hockey or figure skate.

Ultimately it’s all up to you, but I do recommend ice skating and having the right skate makes all the difference in the world.

The Vanilla brand is probably the most well-known out there, creating many different jam skate models.

Urban Skate Buying Guide

So how exactly do you choose the best urban skate for you? Let’s look at some things to consider and also features that you should be aware of when looking for skates.

Factors to Consider

The Environment

Where will you be doing most of your skating? If you’re a true urban skater, you’ll probably be spending most of your time in the city. Here, control is very important. You’ll be going over different surfaces and making fast turns. Look for a smaller wheel (perhaps around 80mm) and good support for fast maneuvers.

The Frequency

How often will you be skating? If you’re a weekend skater who heads out for a short period of time only, you may opt for comfort rather than long term support. However, if you’re looking to spend a good amount of time each day on your urban skates, then plan for the future with a skate that offers solid support and smooth bearings.

Your Skating Goals

It’s time to judge not only your current level of urban skating but where you’ll go in the future. If you’re just starting out, you may want to buy a beginner’s skate. However, if you’re planning to go from beginner to advanced, it may be worthwhile to invest in a higher-end skate that will last you longer instead of upgrading down the road.

Features to Look for in Urban Skates

  1. Liners
  2. Boots
  3. Wheels
  4. Closure
  5. Bearings

Liners

Comfort is a must in any skate, but especially in urban skates. For this reason, it’s important to check out the liners in your boot. While most skates come with standard foam liners, you could upgrade to gel pad liners that fit your foot better and lead to more comfort. Memory foam is also a great resource for comfortable lining. Liners are an important factor in choosing high quality mens hockey skates too.

Boots

The boot of your urban skate will need to be durable and offer good support for urban skating. You’ll be banging these boots around the concrete jungle, so you want to make sure they can withstand the action.

Wheels

Urban skates tend to have smaller wheels, probably around 80mm. This gives you greater speed while maintaining stability. Bigger wheels of around 100mm are also available in urban skates, which mean more speed, but less control. It ultimately depends on your preference.

Closure

There are several types of closure mechanisms available, depending what you prefer. Lacing is standard but lately, has been combined with buckles or straps to maintain better control. Ratchet buckles also give you a nice, tight fit and are normally paired with another system for the most secure closure. These buckles will need to be durable, so they won’t be damaged on impact.

Bearings

Once you know your own skating ability, it will be easier to choose bearings. These are normally rated by your performance, i.e. recreational, performance, or high performance. Choosing the right bearing goes in line with what we mentioned earlier about your skating goals. Investing in a higher quality bearing may be worthwhile if you plan to become an advanced skater.

Brakes

Obviously a very important part of the urban skate, brakes will typically come on the back of the right foot, allowing you to lean backward to stop. As an easier mechanism for beginners, the brand Rollerblade has started to put ABT brakes on their skates, allowing you to slide your foot forward to brake.

Remember, brakes are one feature that is easy to change if you prefer a different style or mechanism.

Goalie Skate Product Buying Guide

Selecting the right goalie skate is a very important choice. One main aspect that you will want to have taken care of is comfort. Many skates featured on this list will offer extra protection where it counts. Any goalie will need extra tongue protection to ensure they are protected from pucks coming their way.  Another crucial concern is the flexibility of a pair of goalie skates.

You’ll find yourself needing to make a few quick saves on the ice. If you’re stuck in a rigid skate, you’ll often feel like some sort of statue. Always look for a goalie skate that offers improved flexibility and work well with wide and narrow feet.

When selecting the right goalie skate, there are a few brands that deserve special mention. The following brands made this list because they offer a superior skate when compared to other brands.

First and foremost, the Bauer brand is the most popular brand for quality goalie skates. However, that isn’t to say that there aren’t other brands creating awesome skates for goalies. Two other brands that make especially great skates would be CCM and Tour Hockey.

Most goalie skates will be made to be taken out on the ice and will have blades. However, there are still many people who prefer to play on non-ice surfaces. Playing on a surface that isn’t made of ice will require your skates to use wheels. For any goalies that need wheeled skates, there is a special pick on this list that you will enjoy.

Summary

A goalie is one of the most important positions to play in a hockey game. When you are out on the ice (or playing on any other surface) protection against flying pucks is essential. The Bauer brand is a popular choice, as they have been creating great goalie skates for years. However, there are other brands, besides Bauer, that design and manufacture quality skates for goalies. CCM and Tour Hockey were two brands that ranked especially high on this list.

Since you will likely be standing in one place for prolonged periods of time, comfort is a must when selecting a pair of skates. In addition, you’ll want to find a good mixture of quality, range of motion and durable foot/leg protection. Lace bite, otherwise known as the pain that occurs when boots are laced too tight, will be an ailment you do not want to suffer from.

Lace bite and being a goalie often go hand-in-hand. However, each pair of goalie skates on this list were made to decrease the probability that you’ll suffer from the dreaded lace bite.

2 Bauer Senior Nexus 4000
3 Ccm Rbz 50 Mens
4 Bauer Senior Vapor X300
5 (Aggressive Skate) CM Tacks 3052 Senior

1. Bauer Nexus N7000 Ice Hockey Skates Bauer Nexus N7000 Review

The entire Nexus line of skates is made with flat footed individuals in mind. A common problem with most hockey skates is that they are too narrow to be comfortable. You’ll enjoy the entire redesign of the classic Bauer skate, with changes made to accommodate a wider foot.

Lined with hydrophobic microfiber, these skates will help keep your feet dry through those longer skating sessions. The foot bed of this skate is made with a Form-Fit material with an added stabilizer grip. Overall, the Bauer Nexus skate offers unmatched room and flexibility for those who have flat feet.

Pros:

Wideness of Skate – Bauer made the Nexus line specifically for wider footed individuals. There is far more foot room in these skates than in the other Bauer lines.

Lightweight Materials – The Nexus N7000 aren’t just easy to carry, they also feel very light while skating in them. The materials in the Nexus skate are still strong enough to effectively protect your feet while skating.

Cons:

Not Great for Narrow Feet – If you have more narrow feet, this skate will most likely feel a bit too wide to wear.

2. Bauer Senior Nexus 4000 Skate

Bauer Senior Nexus 4000 Skate

The Bauer Nexus line makes another appearance on this list, but this skate has its own unique qualities. This skate is a model designed for those wanting a deeper fit. Known as a Deep V, this specially designed skate features a deeper heel pocket.

If you’ve had a favorite pair of house shoes, where your feet sink deeply into the material, you’ll get an idea of how comfortable these skates are. However, don’t think that the comfort of these skates takes away from them being durable. The Bauer Nexus 4000 offers an amazing amount of room but the deepness of the insert may feel too deep for some.

Pros:

Durable – The Nexus 4000 has a brushed nylon liner and a TPR outsole, never sacrificing comfort for protection. You won’t find this skate wearing down quickly; it has been made to withstand normal wear and tear.

Deep-V Design – This pair of skates is tailor-made for those wanting a deeper more form-fitting feel to their skate. You will feel like your feet are sinking down into the skate itself, exceptional for extra long hockey games.

Cons:

Sharpness of Blades – A few customers have reported that they went somewhere to have their blades sharpened on this skate. However, this isn’t a requirement but rather a matter of personal preference.

3. Ccm Rbz 50 Mens Ccm Rbz 50 Mens Review

Made with a durable nylon quarter, the RBZ 50, made by CCM, offers supreme protection. The nylon lining of this skate gives it a great overall feel. The outer sole of this skate has a lower profile, giving it the maximum transfer of energy while skating.

CCM’s exclusive footbed design has been formulated to add extra padding to the RBZ 50. These skates aren’t as wide as the Bauer Nexus line but still provide a great amount of comfort for those with flat feet. In addition, the E-Blade runner offers increased range, a feature not seen on Bauer skates.

Pros:

Comfort Felt Tongue – The design of the tongue on the RBZ 50 skates allows for a more snug fit and reduces lace bite. Lace bite occurs when your boots are too restrictive, creating a painful sensation that runs down the lower leg.

E-Blade Proformance Runner – You’ll find this blade on many great pairs of skates, and it’s great to have it on the RBZ. This runner helps you to maximize push off, ensuring you are able to gain immediate traction and a quick speed boost.

Cons:

Hard to Find – The RBZ 50 can be tough to find in stock. If you do see these skates available, consider getting them before an out of stock issue occurs.

4. Bauer Senior Vapor X300 Skate

The Vapor line of skates made by Bauer is a great choice for those who have flat feet. While not as wide as the Nexus line, the Vapor X300 still offers plenty of comfort. Made of tech nylon with an x-rib pattern, this skate is extremely durable.

Foam ankle padding is placed within this skate to help avoid those annoying ankle blisters. Additional stability built into the heel and ankle mean you won’t find that your feet are wobbling down the rink.

Pros:

Heat Moldable – The Bauer Vapor skates features material that molds to your unique foot size. Your body heat will generate a perfect form-fitting mold every time.

TUUK Blade Holder/Runner – Offering superior support, these TUUK components will have you feeling extra safe while skating.

Cons:

Not As Wide As Nexus – If you have wide feet, the Nexus skates do have the widest design of all Bauer skates. However, the Vapor still offers a supremely form-fitting skating experience.

5. CCM Tacks 3052 Senior Ice Hockey Skates  (Great Aggressive Skates)CCM Ultra Tacks Review

The CCM Tacks 305 are a lower-priced skate, but they certainly don’t sacrifice quality. A nylon AttackFrame Quarter will have these skates holding up well after the toughest of skate sessions. Range of motion is a critical concern when purchasing a good pair of hockey skates.

The CCM Tacks 305 features a Speed Blade 4.0 holder, allowing you lean more freely. In turn, this increased range will allow you to handle crossovers better without falling. Cutting and turning in these skates feel great.

Pros:

Raised Blade – The specially designed blade holder on this skate allows for improved flexibility when skating.

Cons:

May Require Adjusting – A few customers reported that they needed to sometimes adjust the skate, This can definitely be slightly bothersome.

Hockey Skate Product Buying Guide

While any skate could feel semi-comfortable for a few minutes, remember you will be wearing these for long periods of time. It is recommended that you select a pair of skates that are specifically made for wider feet. In most skates you will see an EE sizing, this is another way of saying that this skate is made to fit more widely.

It’s important to note that sizes are relative to the brands creating the skate, there is no industry-wide sizing chart. Form fitting technology has grown in popularity. Wide-footed individuals will greatly benefit from finding a skate with heat moldable capabilities. The Deep-V design of the Bauer Nexus 4000 creates an especially comfortable skating environment for flat feet.

One popular brand for skates made for those who have wide feet would be Bauer. One of the most well-known skate brands around, Bauer has included the Nexus skate into their product line. The entire line of Nexus skates has been created to accommodate skaters with wide feet.

In addition, the Bauer Vapor line of skates, while not as wide as the Nexus, is still a great choice for a comfortable skating experience. However, Bauer isn’t the only brand who caters to those who have flat feet. CCM is another skate brand that has made great innovations for those of us with wide feet. Namely, the Tacks 305 and the RBZ 50, both made by CCM, offer both durability and flexibility.

Summary

Having wide feet doesn’t mean that you have to be uncomfortable playing hockey. Bauer has created multiple skates designed to give wide feet the room that they need. Specifically, the Nexus line offers the widest actual skate of all entries. However, CCM is another brand that offers comfort and protection for flat feet. No matter which brand you choose, there are a few important aspects you’ll want to have covered.

Comfort is of the utmost importance when selecting a hockey skate, as some skates will feel far too snug. Instead, select a skate that has been made for wider feet, as these also have other important features for flat-footed people. Increased stability will be found on wider skates through specially designed blade holders.

The TUUK brand is heavily featured on this list because they create the kind of stability that those with flat feet need to have. Overall, any skate on this list has been made to provide the comfort and stability you need to have a great time while playing hockey!
